India's First Training Squadron completed its Colombo port call on 29 October and conducted a passage exercise with Sri Lanka's SLNS Nandimithra on departure. The squadron comprised INS Tir, INS Sujata and the Indian Coast Guard ship Sarathi, according to the Defence Ministry's report issued on 30 October.
The visit connected classroom learning with operational exposure. Indian sea trainees visited the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee, while Sri Lankan cadets toured the visiting ships to examine training facilities and activities. Senior officers also met the commander of Sri Lanka's Western Naval Area.
The passage exercise involved coordinated maritime manoeuvres intended to improve how the two forces operate together. Such training gives crews practical experience of communication and coordination at sea, complementing the institutional relationships developed during port visits.
The programme also included a beach clean-up and public access to the ships for local residents and the Indian diaspora. These activities broadened the visit beyond formal defence meetings, although the ministry did not announce a new agreement or permanent deployment arising from the call.
