Maharashtra's First Year Junior College admission process has moved into a decisive phase with the first merit list allotting seats to nearly 65 percent of applicants under CAP Round 1. Students who have been allotted seats have time until June 3 to confirm admission, while those who received their first-preference college must complete confirmation.
The scale of the process is large. Across the state, 8,87,264 candidates applied for FYJC admissions in the first round, and 5,74,943 students received allotments. Science accounted for the largest number, with 3,23,431 allotments, followed by commerce at 1,26,090 and arts at 1,25,422.
In the Mumbai division, 2,11,660 candidates applied and 1,33,323 received seats. Among them, 67,583 students secured their first-preference college, making confirmation compulsory for that group. The science stream also saw strong demand in Mumbai, with 31,136 students getting first-choice seats.
Cut-off scores at prominent colleges remained close to last year's levels, though several institutions recorded a marginal dip. R A Podar College's commerce cut-off moved from 94.6 percent to 94.2 percent, while science cut-offs at Ramnivas Ruia Junior College and St Xavier's College also eased slightly. The small decline suggests competition remains intense even after concerns about a lower SSC pass percentage.
The first round also exposed a registry problem for some junior colleges in interior Maharashtra. These colleges were absent from the centralised online admission system and therefore could not participate in the first round. A special access window is scheduled to allow verified colleges to upload details before the second round.
The process is still running earlier than last year, when the first merit list was delayed until late June. For students and parents, the immediate priority is to check allotment status, confirm first-preference seats within the deadline and watch for the second-round schedule on June 5.
