Iran has doubled the price of petrol purchased beyond a consumer’s monthly quota, introducing another politically sensitive increase as the country faces high inflation and a weakening currency.
State media said motorists buying more than 110 litres a month must now pay 100,000 rials per litre for additional fuel. Akashvani News said that this is twice the above-quota price in place since December.
The increase affects high-volume consumption rather than replacing the entire quota system. Its wider economic significance will depend on whether higher transport and distribution costs feed into prices for other goods and services.
Fuel pricing has repeatedly prompted public opposition in Iran, where inexpensive petrol has long been treated as an important household benefit. The government’s next steps, including any changes to quotas or support for consumers, will therefore be watched closely.
