India and Benin held high-level discussions in Porto-Novo on cooperation spanning defence, health, agriculture and economic ties. Indian Ambassador Abhishek Singh met Benin’s Vice-President Mariam Chabi Talata, conveyed greetings from Indian Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan and discussed expanding development partnerships and people-to-people exchanges.
Security cooperation formed a separate part of the engagement. Singh met Benin’s Minister Delegate for National Defence, Gildas Agonkan, for talks on capacity building, training assistance and institutional links. Beninese personnel already attend courses in India through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation programme and participate in military exercises.
The discussions build on earlier defence contact rather than inaugurating it. A Beninese delegation led by the country’s Chief of Naval Staff participated in the International Fleet Review 2026 and the MILAN 2026 maritime exercise in Visakhapatnam, providing an existing channel for professional exchanges between the two armed forces.
The 16 October account signals a broad diplomatic agenda, but it records no signed agreement, funding commitment, procurement decision or implementation timetable. Its significance therefore lies in the sectors placed on the bilateral agenda and the continuation of training and institutional contact.
