The Cabinet's September 9 approvals included five southern rail projects costing about Rs 10,021 crore. The Railway Ministry names Arakkonam-Renigunta, Whitefield-Bangarapet, Hosur-Omalur, Salem-Karur-Dindigul and Secunderabad-Kazipet.
Two projects add third and fourth lines, two involve doubling, and the fifth is described as multitracking. The 540-km package increases capacity along existing corridors rather than creating five entirely new railway connections.
The ministry expects additional freight capacity as well as improved passenger movement. Extra tracks expand the infrastructure available for scheduling on shared routes; they do not themselves specify new passenger services or fares.
The works cover 17 districts in four states. Akashvani reported them alongside three other projects in a wider approval exceeding Rs 20,800 crore. The 2029-30 construction target is separate from the broader proposal to quadruple seven high-density corridors.
