A July 12, 2026 Commerce Ministry announcement set out Piyush Goyal's planned July 13-17 visit to Spain, Belgium and Finland. The itinerary combined business meetings with visits focused on logistics, diamonds and advanced industrial technologies.

Belgium's programme included the Port of Antwerp and Antwerp World Diamond Centre; Finland's included Nokia and the VTT research centre. Brussels was also scheduled to host a Trade and Technology Council ministerial meeting.

The council's earlier work explains the connection between these subjects. In its February 2025 account, the European Commission described three strands: digital and strategic technologies; green technologies; and trade, investment and resilient supply chains.

Specific areas included digital-system interoperability, electric-vehicle battery recycling and supply chains for pharmaceutical ingredients. These are not simply tariff questions. They concern whether systems can work together, materials can be recovered and essential inputs can reach manufacturers reliably.

The July programme connected commercial contacts with research and supply-chain cooperation. Port operations, industrial technology and standards affect different stages of a product's journey from development to an overseas customer.
