India's decision to establish a resident defence attache at its embassy in Brussels formed part of the outcomes of Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever's September 3-4, 2026 visit. Belgium's official diplomatic record places the posting alongside a defence-cooperation letter of intent and a series of industry memorandums.

The package operates at different levels. The embassy appointment provides a continuing government contact, while the listed industrial agreements connect companies and industry bodies. Partners include Larsen & Toubro and Exail businesses, as well as Kalyani Strategic Systems and FN Herstal.

That distinction matters when assessing the announcement. A diplomatic posting is not a weapons order, and a memorandum does not establish that equipment has been delivered. The published list gives neither procurement quantities nor delivery schedules; claims about completed production would go beyond it.

The same visit also produced arrangements concerning renewable energy, investment facilitation and police cooperation. Defence was therefore one strand of a wider institutional relationship, rather than the sole purpose of the visit.
