BRICS standards bodies moved towards closer cooperation at a Bengaluru meeting on July 16, 2026. India's official account says a majority signed a memorandum, while other participants were still completing domestic approval procedures.
Some participating bodies were still awaiting domestic approval when the memorandum was signed, giving the cooperation framework a staged start.
Standards cooperation can involve developing common technical approaches, but a technical specification, a legal requirement and proof of compliance are different things. ISO explains that its international standards are voluntary and do not displace national law; conformity assessment is the separate task of demonstrating that specified requirements have been met.
Accordingly, this memorandum is not evidence that a product cleared in one BRICS market automatically qualifies for sale in every other one. Such a conclusion would require the relevant rules and recognition arrangements, not simply an agreement to cooperate.
An artificial-intelligence workshop was scheduled for July 17, adding a technical discussion to the institutional agreement.
