Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir at the foreign ministry in Dhaka on September 29, 2026. It was his first courtesy call on Kobir since the minister took office. Trivedi congratulated him on the appointment, and the two discussed bilateral relations, regional and international developments, including the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
After the meeting, Kobir told journalists that the two countries were discussing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's possible visit to India and working through difficulties in the relationship. He declined to confirm reports of a November visit, saying timing would depend on a favourable environment and mutual respect. Trivedi also said discussions were continuing and that the two prime ministers would need to find a convenient time, BSS reported.
The visit had already faced a setback in August. NDTV's September 29 reporting said Dhaka and New Delhi had discussed a mid-August trip, but those plans stalled after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina addressed journalists at a Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia event in New Delhi. Bangladesh objected to the appearance. India said it had no role in organising the event and did not endorse Hasina's comments.
Rahman still had Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation for bilateral talks, NDTV reported. The broadcaster also identified a diplomatic transition in New Delhi: Bangladesh's newly appointed high commissioner, Asad Alam Siam, was expected to take charge the following month. Its report linked discussion of a later visit to that expected arrival. Those arrangements formed the background to the September 29 contact, while the minister's own public remarks left the visit date open rather than confirming the November timetable being reported.
