An August 2, 2026 review of the Ujh Multipurpose Project in Kathua described phased implementation while remaining land acquisition proceeded. Jitendra Singh met WAPCOS officials, whom the ministry identified as the implementing agency.
The announced aims combine irrigation in Kathua, Samba, Pathankot and Gurdaspur with drinking water for Kathua and electricity generation. The release gives a power-capacity range of 186-212 MW, rather than one settled figure.
Megawatts express generating capacity, while electricity produced over a year depends on how the plant operates. As the US Department of Energy explains, hydropower depends on water flow and the elevation difference, or head. Moving water drives a turbine and generator; the available energy changes with those physical conditions.
For Ujh's combination of irrigation, drinking water and generation, the timing of water releases connects the different services. A turbine specification describes only the power equipment; water availability and delivery infrastructure determine what can reach farms and households. Phasing construction therefore also involves the connections between the project's water-storage, distribution and generation functions.
