Amritpal Singh, also identified as Gurpal Singh and Amrit Dalam, was returned from Moldova to India on September 12, 2026. The CBI said it coordinated the extradition with the external affairs and home ministries and Punjab Police. Akashvani reported that four Punjab Police officers travelled to Moldova to bring him back to face criminal cases registered in Punjab.
The CBI account listed allegations involving a double murder with firearms, Arms Act and narcotics offences, forged documents and Passport Act violations. A separate Punjab Police account identified the returning team as led by Anti-Gangster Task Force superintendent Bikramjit Singh Brar. It credited that task force and the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell with arranging the transfer alongside central agencies.
In his September 12 public statement, Punjab police chief Gaurav Yadav described the operation as a six-month intelligence-led pursuit called Operation Eastern Reach. He named the AGTF and OFTEC as the participating state units and acknowledged cooperation from Moldovan and Azerbaijani authorities, the CBI's international police cooperation unit and the two Union ministries. Yadav described it as Punjab Police's first successful extradition from a European country.
The police chief's statement also alleged that Singh was linked to the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang and was wanted in murder, attempted murder, UAPA, weapons and narcotics cases. Those descriptions are the investigating authorities' account of the cases being pursued, not findings of guilt announced by a trial court. The completed development was his return to Indian custody.
The CBI identified Singh as a Red Notice subject. INTERPOL's published rules distinguish that alert from an international arrest warrant: it requests location and provisional arrest pending extradition or similar proceedings, while each country applies its own law. In this case, the authorities reported a completed extradition, beyond merely locating a wanted person through the international alert system.
