Bihar Police reported five people in custody by the afternoon of September 22, 2026 over an alleged assault on a teenage girl and her male friend in Jamui. The New Indian Express reported two arrests after three minors were detained on September 21. The incident occurred on September 19.
Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal said accused Nandan Yadav suffered a bullet injury during a police operation and was receiving hospital treatment. According to his account in the newspaper, Yadav fired when officers found him and another suspect, Hareram; Hareram fractured his knee attempting to flee. These were police assertions about the encounter, not court findings.
Police also reported registering cases against operators of 132 social-media profiles over alleged disclosure, or potential disclosure, of the girl's identity. The September 22 newspaper report said investigators were examining videos and other evidence to establish involvement in the assault. Authorities appealed against sharing footage or information that could identify the children.
Earlier reporting by The Times of India described how police traced the girl and her friend, recorded their statements and registered an FIR after receiving her written complaint. It identified SDPO Deepti Monali as the head of the special investigation team. The reported FIR invoked Sections 74, 76 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The National Commission for Women also intervened. According to the Times report, chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar's letter to the Bihar police chief called for identification and arrest of those involved, measures against further circulation of the video and an action-taken report within seven days. The Bihar State Women Commission separately asked the Jamui superintendent to report the steps taken.
