India defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the men's Asian Games hockey final on October 3, 2026, retaining the title and securing a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 11th minute, before Shello Silverius brought Malaysia level. Jugraj Singh restored India's lead with another penalty corner in the 23rd minute.
Hardik Singh's 42nd-minute penalty stroke extended the advantage. Shilanand Lakra scored in the 54th minute, and Harmanpreet added his second three minutes later.
The scoring pattern shows the importance of set plays: three penalty-corner goals and a penalty stroke supplied four of India's five goals. Malaysia's first-quarter equaliser kept the contest level initially, but India scored in each of the remaining quarters.
Qualification also separated the finalists. India obtained direct Olympic entry as continental champion; Malaysia and five other teams earned places in the Olympic qualifying tournaments. Those were different stages on the route to Los Angeles.
The decisive final followed a much closer semifinal, which India won 4-3 against Pakistan with a last-minute goal. Across the two knockout matches, India therefore combined a narrow escape with a four-goal final victory, rather than advancing through uniformly comfortable contests.
